Recently, I’ve run into some trouble loading dates from a file into PBCS for Employee planning. The only way I could get dates loaded was via SmartView Submit Data.

I was attempting to load dates with a Planning formatted file through the Administration > Import and Export > Import Data from File option. All data would load without errors – except the hire date field would not load. Salary, and any other data field would load without issue. For some reason – the date wasn’t formatted correctly, even though I specified the date format on the import task.

I tried several date options to no avail:

The Solution

After extensive testing and working with Oracle Support; the solution was to load a Planning formatted file via the Simplified Interface. The date was not able to be loaded via Import Data from File from within the launched application (also, from speaking with Oracle, there is no more development happening on the Import Data feature from within Workspace; aka, this bug will not get fixed. The data can get loaded from the Simplified Interface only). Additionally, the date format had to be in the following format: mm-dd-yyyy, after looking at the application settings. However; if a month or date field was only one digit, the field cannot be padded with a preceding “0”.

Example: August 4, 2015 would be formatted as 8-4-2015

Notice the difference in format between a text editor and Excel. When saving the file, ensure that it is being saved from a text editor to avoid Excel changing the format of the date.

After the file is formatted, it can be loaded via the Simplified Interface.

On the Planning Administration interface, press “Simplified Interface” and then select “Console”. From there, go to the right hand corner “Actions” dropdown and select “Import Data”.

On the Import Data screen, select Create, to create a new Data Import job.

Select Local, Planning, and Comma delimited, then Browse for the file to upload. Press “Import” to import the data. You can check the Job Status in Workspace to see if there are any problems with the data load.

If you want to automate the load, select “Planning Inbox” and type the name of the file. In this case, you will have to use the EPM Automate utility to transfer the file from your server to the cloud Planning Inbox via a batch file/command line. (I will highlight how to write EPM Automate scripts in an upcoming post).

Once that is complete, you can press “Save as Job” in the upper right-hand corner of the screen and name your import job. Then you will be able to call that job in your EPM Automate script to load the file.

Other Notes

To find the setting for the application for the default date format, go to Administration > Application > Settings and flip to the “Current Application Defaults” tab. Near the bottom of the page, there is a setting “Attribute Dimension Options” > Attribute Dimension Date Format.
